Why did the UK vote to leave the European Union?
Economy
People that believed that BREXIT was a good thing saw it as an economic opportunity for Britain. this was the opposite to the Remain Campaigns who saw BREXIT as a warning for economic decline. this differed slightly because of voters feeling economically behind as a result of membership of the EU. people who wanted leave the EU liked the idea of free trade and a free market, they may have seen the EU as a threat to their freedom in the market. they see potential for trade with countries outside of the EU which they see as more valuable than the trade deals already established within the EU. they believe that due to the EU regulations for trade no longer being a problem for Britain they see it as a way to boost Britain in the market. Examples of politicians who agree with this idea are Boris Johnson and Jacob Rees-Mogg.
The Financial Crisis of 2008 and the Eurozone Crisis in 2009 may have been factors swaying the British decision to leave the EU as well to try and 'protect' the British Economy.
Sovereignty
out of the people that voted to leave the EU 49% of them said they would leave because they believed that decisions about the UK should involve the UK and no one else. They believed that we should have 'sovereignty' over our country. It would make logical sense that leaving the EU would give more power to the people of the UK to decide what we are going to do, this is because EU law will no longer be part of the UK statutory law thus giving more strength in law making to the UK itself, giving it absolute sovereignty in its country.
Immigration
Immigration controls will be completely under the control of the government when BREXIT is carried out. The government will be able to put into place a cap in relation to the amount of immigrants that are wanted in the country at once by the government. It was realised b the government, before BREXIT that there was a significant increase in specifically migration from EU countries. Therefore, when Britain leaves the EU they will no longer have EU law as statutory law and so they will be able to limit the amount of migrants and immigrants coming into the country. in 2014 the amount of immigrants coming in was 268,000 which was up from 201,000 in 2013 and in 2015 the numbers of EU national migrants and immigrants was at 172,00 from EU countries and 191,000 from non EU countries.
Demographics
It has been said that one reason for Britain leaving the EU was because of the difference in ideology between the younger and older voters. It was said that most older voters, voted to leave due to them being alive and experiencing Britain before 1973 (when Britain went into the EU under Wilson - Labour PM). The EU was previously called the EEC (European Economic Community). It has been argued that this prior EU Britain nostalgia that the older people were feeling may of had a large influence on their decision. A higher turnout of older people and a lower turnout of younger people was a large reason in my opinion that the referendum went the way it did. Younger people didn't vote as much, had less say in the matter and so the leave voter older people got what they wanted.
The education of the people voting remain seemed to be higher (younger people) than the people voting leave (older people). This is significant because the older people may not know the modern day implications of voting to leave the EU, the younger people probably do becayse of their higher base level of education than the older people, this is probably why the voting split is more one sided for each sgre group. This is probably a large reason as to why older people voted leave and younger people voted stay.
